High Potential Coaching Program: Getting ready for the partner role

Impact Coaches partnered with the national partner-in-charge at a multinational firm to accelerate the development of 65+ of the firm’s high potential managing directors.
The challenge
The firm didn’t have enough candidates ready for partnership roles, and targeted groups were not well represented in the firm’s senior ranks.
The approach
- Paired each managing director with one of our coaches and a mentor within the firm.
- Conducted a personalized 360 assessment for each managing director, interviewing leaders, peers, and direct reports to understand the full scope of their strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots.
- Worked with each managing director to create a customized development plan, focusing their mentoring relationship on specific objectives.
Each high potential met regularly with their Impact Coach and mentor (together and separately) over the course of 9 months to develop skills and expertise across four broad areas: business acumen, leadership skills, market leadership skills, and team development skills. We also worked with the managing directors to get them ready for the partner panel process.
The results
At the end of the program, 85% of the high potentials made it to partner. Year-after-year results also demonstrated:
- Overall increased business effectiveness
- Enhanced understanding of the firm’s strategy among the high potential leaders
- A strong cross-functional team
- A firmly-established mentoring culture
