Every once in a while in coaching, we encounter a client engagement that stands out. Not because there’s a crisis to fix or a dramatic turnaround to stage, but because the conditions for meaningful, sustained growth are truly present.

This was the case for the CEO of a portfolio company whose leadership journey was as rewarding for us as it has been transformative for his organization.


The challenge

The CEO was grounded, thoughtful, hard-working, and genuinely good to work with. He stepped into a business that was already well-run and successful. He wanted to do even more to increase the organization’s performance, the leadership team’s, and his own. Some of his leaders and people lacked the capabilities to support the organization’s growth goals. And the CEO wanted to elevate his own effectiveness and increase his confidence as the leader of the organization.


The approach

We supported the CEO in making tough calls, including letting people go when it became clear the organization needed different capabilities to support its ambition. We also supported him in evolving his leadership, assessing and shaping his senior team, and making decisions that positioned the firm for sustained growth.

At the same time, several of his high-potential leaders partnered with our coaches, giving us rich insight into the organization. Insight we looped back to the CEO in a thoughtful, synthesized way that helped him make better decisions.

We focused on assessments for the CEO and his leadership team, structured reflection, honest dialogue, and being a trusted partner who could help the CEO see around corners, challenge assumptions, and intentionally design the leadership team and culture he wanted to build.

The CEO, his leaders, and the Impact team created an integrated coaching ecosystem that allowed us all to do our best work. The CEO was open, reflective, committed to growth, and dedicated to making changes that would benefit the organization. His leaders were curious, hardworking, collaborative, and honest. Our coaching team and project manager were deeply engaged, aligned, and able to offer perspectives that went beyond individual behaviour change – touching on culture, structure, succession, and the capabilities the organization needed next.

The results

The impact was profound. Under the CEO’s leadership, the firm doubled – and then tripled – in size. He strengthened top-line growth, improved the bottom line by double digits, and reshaped his entire leadership team.
