The Board of a healthcare institution wanted to ensure an incoming CEO elevated her performance before taking a role that was completely new to her. The incoming CEO also needed to retool the leadership team to ensure she had the right senior leaders in place to help her drive the organization’s strategic goals.


The challenge

The new CEO had never taken on a role like this before and needed to develop the right skillsets including managing multiple challenging key stakeholders in a tough economic, political, and organizational environment. The CEO also needed to assess and build out the leadership team’s capabilities to be able to support her in her new role, and increase the proficiencies of future leaders in levels below the executive team to help create a robust succession pipeline.


The approach

One of our senior coaches worked with the CEO, one-on-one, to develop her skills in strategic thinking, change management and execution and stakeholder relations.   A separate team of coaches worked with each member of the leadership team individually, ensuring alignment with the CEO and her emerging strategy.

Next, our coaches worked with high-potential leaders in VP and Director roles in a high potential program, providing individual and group coaching for two cohorts, each over the course of one year.

The results

The CEO grew substantially into her role, becoming a confident and effective leader able to help the organization address the many complex challenges impacting the healthcare industry in Ontario today.

The CEO was able to evaluate the strengths and development areas of her C-suite so they could be effective leaders on her team much more quickly. She was also able to understand her team members more deeply so she could lead them more effectively.

As well, the CEO and leadership team now have a strong pipeline of future leaders to include in their succession planning, some of whom who have already been promoted within the organization as a result of Impact’s coaching program.
